St Peters U9s slug it out with Lewes Priory at the STG

Narrow defeat on stunning day away at Lewes Prior CC

An exciting, tense and hard fought game that did justice to a beautiful morning ultimately saw Lewes Priory emerge the victors by 12 runs at the STG.

It was hot. It was picturesque. And it was a pleasure to watch St Peters play some excellent cricket at Lewes Priory’s ground.

St Peters won the toss, and skipper Joe decided to bat. A bold move by a confident captain.

St Peters first challenge was to adapt to a new ball. Lewes Priory opted for a windy ball. Bouncy, soft, orange … the Lewes version of the Kookaburra!

The team adapted quickly and well. The highlights of the batting were some lusty blows from Noah, and some excellent batting from Harvey and George. Alex knocked around the singles to get the team up to a good total. The team ran quick singles brilliantly, although one or two were kamikaze and resulted in run outs!

So St Peters net score was 259 after a strong batting performance.

St Peters now faced the challenges of bowling with the windy ball. Ball after ball narrowly bounced over the wickets. The bowling attack was relentless. Accurate, penetrating and a credit to the bowlers. The stand out performances were from Maxime, Harvey, Arlo and Oscar who each took a wicket. Aaron bowled very well and was unlucky not to take a wicket. The same goes for Super George, whose boundless energy inspired the team once again. There was also an excellent run out from Huxley.

The fielding effort was outstanding.

So to the result. Going into the final, bowled fearlessly by Skipper Joe, the scores were neck and neck and the home parents were biting nails and watching anxiously. Lewes Priory scrambled home at the end - but not before our team showed their quality and courage.

A great performance by an excellent team played in exactly the right spirit. Well done everyone. I’m sure the result will go St Peters way next time round.
